Bob Howard Toyota welcomes you to learn what the signs of a broken gas cap are.
The most common symptom of bad gas caps is going to be a gas cap that will not tighten completely or a gas cap that is loose. This might not seem significant at first, but without an air-tight seal, the entire fuel system can be exposed to grime and dirt. If the gas cap isn’t closing properly, try checking the rubber seal to make sure it’s not brittle or missing. If you own an old car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap is not bent or damaged. Both can cause gas cap issues and may even require buying a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What problems can a non-secure gas cap cause, well a check engine light for starters? An ill-fitting gas cap will not only let in dirt and grime, but it can also allow fuel vapors to escape the gas tank. These fuel vapors could trigger errors in the emissions system, which could light up the check engine light. Dirt that gets into the gas tank may also contaminate fuel injectors over time. Perhaps the most common sign of a faulty gas cap is the gasoline smell in your vehicle.
If your car was not built with a capless gas tank, you shouldn’t drive without a gas cap installed. If your car or truck is a little older, there’s a possibility that gasoline could escape from the fuel tank during aggressive cornering or other enthusiastic driving. If you drive your vehicle without a gas cap, it can lead to reduced gas mileage because the fuel might evaporate without the correct seal on the fuel filler. The smell is the gasoline evaporating from your fuel tank, which can cause diminished fuel economy.
If you’ve already inspected the gas cap, the problems you’re having might be due to bad fuel. If the car, truck, or SUV has trouble starting, will not accelerate, or just is not running right, then you might just have bad gas.
