When you think of an environmentally friendly Toyota you think of a Prius. The 2021 Toyota Mirai offers you up to 76 MPGe by using hydrogen as the primary fuel. Yes, we said hydrogen and since the hydrogen storage tanks can handle 5 times the crash energy as steel and features ways to stop the flow of the hydrogen, it’s as safe as any other Toyota.
The Mirai generates its power a little differently than you might have heard of. A chemical reaction between the hydrogen and outside air coming through the intake grille generates energy. An electric motor is fed that energy and produces 182 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Together the system can provide the equivalent of 76mpg and a 400 mile range. Filling up is done by a pump similar to a standard gas station and your Toyota Mirai can be refilled in about 5 minutes time.
Even with the hydrogen providing the power, the 2021 Toyota Mirai is otherwise just a normal car. LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch alloys, a Smart Key, heated front seats, and automatic climate control are all standard on the Mirai. 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, cooled front seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a motorized rear-window sunshade are some of the interesting upgrades.
Every Mirai comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. This impressive collection of safety features include Lane Departure Alert, a Pre-Collision System (with Pedestrian Detection), and Road Sign Assist. A Bird’s Eye Camera with 360-degree views, and Front and Rear Parking Assist are impressive options. Add in Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa and your choices for entertainment on your 12.3-inch touchscreen will be nearly limitless.
